Dude, I went through this when I was younger. I gave up and now I'm really sorry for that. Please, don't make a mistake, don't give up. Maybe you just chose a wrong strategy, maybe something distracts you, maybe you just have to look at gamedev with fresh eyes like you did when you only got interested in making games for the first time. Right now I'm not in the best mood too because I'm trying to switch to Unity and learn 3D modelling, it's very frustrating and sometimes it seems like I don't make any progress but I also know that if I keep going then one day I will overcome that barrier and you can overcome it too. Search and look for how other people learn programming and gamedev, try to come up with your own learning strategy, develop a habit of working toward your goal every single day, and take a brake when you need to.

Yeah to echo a comment below, this work is using a lot of material that's really culturally sensitive, even if you were Aboriginal there are some things that people not from particular communities and language groups simply aren't allowed to depict, and would have to seek permission from elders from those communities to do so, also the messaging of the game of killing Aboriginal gods along with those tribal designed enemies seems really problematic, as Aboriginal people experienced genocide and erasure of their spiritual beliefs and figures, I'm not really sure if this project can be salvaged with that kind of content, not saying this to "cancel" your work or whatever more just to implore you to consider these things for future work, I understand this was a student project but it's very important to engage in cultural consultancy when doing projects like this, it's not as necessary when taking inspiration from things like medieval Europe but when taking from Indigenous cultures and other marginalised cultures there's a lot more that needs to be considered

    • Skinner Space
      Skinner Space Month ago

So I see your point and I understand what I've done. Anyway, the game is short and has a pretty low traffic of players. I didn't even think about feeling of aboriginal people when I developed this game because I thought that nobody will take it seriously. I was surprised when I got acquainted with Australian aboriginal mythology and couldn't find any game that would use it as a setting. Now I see why.

If you have vibrations you need to have a toggle to turn them off. Usually with vibrations you dont want them to go off too much and you definitely need use the latest haptics libraries to get quality vibrations. If you look at other games with good vibrations you'll notice they are super subtle because even a little bit can be a lot in a repetitive game. The vibrations you chose were a little obnoxious to be going off all the time IMO. I think its a little too unfocused art wise and gameplay wise. I think pouring water into glasses is neat and I liked it, I would rather the game only focused on that aspect, not dropping tea bags. None of the artistic ideas felt connected, but each piece looked like quality pixel art on its own. I didn't like dropping tea bags and just spammed them up front, then poured water as fast as possible and almost always got a hit. With the time pressure, controls, and different mechanics it was a little overwhelming and it had too small of a ramp down in intensity. I think in general with mobile games, unless its pvp, you probably want to avoid time pressure, it might be better if you have limited water or something but you can take your time.

@Alex Lee Thank you so much! I fully agree with you and appreciate your advice. I'll try to focus on things that I truly enjoy.

    • Alex Lee

@Skinner Space I think being genuine in your videos is usually the right answer. There's nothing wrong with throwing a bunch of game mechanics together just for fun, and you never know what might stick, I think if you framed it a certain way it would make sense. Also you're doing what 99% of developers never do which is release games, so don't be hard on yourself. Game design is really fun, but it's just a lot of learning about unwritten hidden rules in human behavior so it takes a while, you shouldn't give up. If you do just enjoy art and coding you could always team up with a game designer pal you can trust and then you can focus more on the parts of game Dev you really enjoy, but you're doing a lot of things right so don't give up.

    • Skinner Space

Thanks for honest feedback! I really appreciate it. These problems can be addressed to almost all my projects. Sometimes I don't even know whether I want to make games or I just want to make some random stuff and have fun. Nuclear Teapot is just a mess. A bunch of random game mechanics that exist not because it should be fun to play but because it was fun to work on them which is the reason why gamedev is still only a hobby for me and not something more (unfortunately). I know game design is important but I'm not fond of planning and carefully designing stuff. I struggle with it a lot and I often think of finding another creative outlet instead of forcing myself to make games and pretend like I wholeheartedly enjoy it in my videos :/

  • Alex Lee
    Alex Lee Month ago

I tried playing it and had trouble getting into it. The art is very good for your time spent, but I needed some sort of prompts on what my objective was and how to destroy totems. I spent a while walking around not knowing I needed to destroy totems and more time not being able to destroy totems. You probably dont want to let them even scroll the screen until they destroy the first totem and you probably want some super clear prompt on how to destroy a totem especially since the final hit is very special. I also felt like the landscape made it really awkward to get used to combat. Its hard to pinpoint but its just hard to get your bearings at the start because everything comes at you a little too quickly. I would have liked to get comfortable on flat ground and get into harder terrain over time especially since the controls had me falling into pits. Anyways it might be a good concept but its hard to get into, for me at least.

Such a nice video! Really enjoyed listening to the stories about flappy bird and the secret commission! Croissants should be the next character in the game! Have it appear after 2-3 levels as a bonus round. Fill it in with jelly or chocolate or butter as soon as possible before the time ends by shooting it and get points. Really nice mechanic of shooting to the sky! Always crazy to watch the awesome things you make!

The art style and animations are so good, even with the shader effect to make more interesting effects. Your games definitely have more details going on than mine. I make a few games for hobby, but I'm also interested in getting myself monetized someday. Would you like to share how can I move towards that?

    • Skinner Space
      Skinner Space 3 months ago

Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't know how to monetize my games. The only project that I monetized is Brutal Castle, I just sell it on itch.io. To be honest, I struggle with thinking about money a lot, it often undermines my motivation to make new projects because after a couple of years of game development art for art's sake seems pointless.

I just have a pug and I thought about making some physics-based drag and drop game before. Usually, I start with something boring and come up with something new only during the development.

Nice game, very juicy. But damn, hard to wrap my brain around controlling the skull with ASD and the hands with left and right. I keep hitting left when Ì want the heart to move and A when I want to hit with the left hand. Easy to beat perhaps, but really hard to master.

@Vegard Beider Thanks for the suggestions! I think it will make the game much better, so I'm gonna implement it.

Thanks! I know the whole idea of controlling two characters with a similar control scheme is quite counterintuitive and requires time to learn. Such problems always appear when I'm starting with making art assets and then trying to build something playable from it.

Ops hit enter a bit too early, I think the only critcism I have is that holding space seems unecessary. While you have control, to play the game you have to hold it down constantly so it kind of feels redundant. Also if you had more time maybe a slower introduction where you start with 1 lane for the first phase and only need to hit left or right to hit. Then for second phase (When you got muscles on) you get two lanes and need to also control the heart. Then maybe add one more stage after completing the skin such as powering up with lightning or something, where you got all three lanes. I think this would make the difficulty curve a bit better. That being said the game looks and feels great though.

I use a random generator of guitar riffs DJen and audacity. I generate hundreds of different samples, choose the best of them and mix them together. So I have completely free nice soundtracks!

Thanks! I've been developing games with Godot for 1,5 years and before that, I used Construct 2 for half a year. I also tried to make games in 2017-2018 but I wasn't serious about game dev at that time and after struggle and frustration with coding, I just quit which I regret so much.

Thank you) My games are still far from perfect but a couple of years ago when I saw games of other developers I thought the same thing as you said. Just keep working, manage to go through frustration and burnout periods and you will achieve a lot.

You should definitely have the skinny boss spawn instruments. Any enemy that picks them up, buffs other nearby enemies
