The opening to this video caused me to tear up a bit. Colonel Broughton became a legend to me when I read Thud Ridge in 1977 as a Navy P-3 crewman sitting at Diego Garcia. When I commissioned into the Air Force in 1983, I remember seeing an F-105 in the traffic pattern and immediately thought of him. There is no doubt that he and airman like him flew some of the toughest missions in Air Force history. There is also no doubt that politicians, always parochial enemies to actual warriors, failed to honor him as he deserved. Now, as a retired officer, I often wonder if he knee how much Thud drivers were and are respected by professional warriors. I am sorry for his passing, but he will remain a hero in the annals of US air combat. He fought a tough war that inspired Desert Storm’s effectiveness. I salute his life. May he find peace wherever he is flying now.

This is the ceremonial burial plaza at the new National Cemetery at Miramar in San Diego. My uncle, Captain Patrick Flynn, MD, USN is buried there. With Ft. Rosecrans being full, it is nice to see that the need for another National cemetery was met. My uncle was a flight surgeon, serving on the USS Ranger and USS Constellation during the Vietnam conflict. He was a great father figure to me, as my Dad was a nuclear submariner, who spent nearly 11 years on patrol/deployed during our childhood. BTW, my Dad, Captain Byron H. Collier in interred at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. And like your Grandfather, I am an Air Force veteran, having served from 1986-1995. I was an AC130 Spectre gunship pilot.

Col. Broughton was a dedicated warrior and true leader. He deserved better from the Air Force that he served and sacrificed for. I had the honor to speak with him over the phone about twenty years ago and told him so. I salute you sir.

I got to meet Jack sell broken at the Park Ridge New Jersey Marriott. He was there for a West Point reunion. In that room full of people you could see he was the most special. I was the head of that security detail and he keep offering me food and beer. And I kept telling him I was on duty. He was a Charming guy. Later that evening he had a heart attack and I was called to his room. His wife was frantic and he kept telling her relax. I know he was having a heart attack from the symptoms she knew and so did he. There Was Fear on my face There Was Fear on her face but not on jacks. When the ambulance took him they told me to relax because if he survived this long he was going to survive. Anyway, for the next few weeks I kept Googling his name originally to make sure he hadn't passed. But just became overwhelmed by his accomplishments. It was an honor to have met him and I will never forget him. So he lives on in the heart of a total stranger. Special guy.

Looks like the new National Cemetery at Miramar? My uncle Dr. Patrick Flynn is buried there. Beautiful spot for a pilot to rest, listening to aircraft flying. Col. Broughton was a great, legendary pilot. His book, 'Thud Ridge' was one of my favorite reads as I prepared to become an Air Force pilot during the mid 80's.

As a retired Air Force pilot myself I really enjoyed reading his book 'Thud Ridge': I greatly appreciated every single word in it. He truly was a great pilot and leader!

A very moving tribute to one of the greatest fighter pilots of all time. When I look up into that beautiful clear blue sky and see the contrail of an airliner I smile and think way up above with Jack flying Lead and the big man on his wing as they go over the top with smoke on, Jack teaches his new charge how to fly the perfect loop.
