Making Cutscenes is So Easy With My New Custom Plugin! | Devlog
I love to tell stories, which is why they're such a big part of game development for me. So I've created a fancy pants cutscene editor so that I can easily build events for the upcoming demo. It'll also be useful for fun little gags in these devlogs. I have already done this before with Zoe and the Cursed Dreamer. But this time I built it as a plugin inside of the Godot Engine!
This is the 4th devlog for reQuest, a 2D pixel art mini-RPG Indie Game built in the Godot Engine where you'll explore a cozy open world which you solve like a puzzle, unlocking new areas to explore and cute enemies to destroy.

Simple Enemies are MORE Fun! Tips For Creating Enemies | Devlog
Views 19K6 months ago
Players often request complex enemies with randomization and lots of behaviors thinking this will make for a more fun enemy, but I disagree! Enemies that are simple are better for the player to form strategies around and are more memorable. But that doesn't mean they have to be easy. I have some tips and tricks for how you can design enemies to be simple yet engaging for your players! This is t...
New Skills Don't Need to be Boring! | Devlog

It's not enough to add abilities to a game and call it done. If an ability only does one thing then you've only created a key. To really improve the depth of your game, you need to expand on this and use what you have in creative ways. So I added arrows that blow stuff up! I added an equipment system that allows you to equip items to the player such as weapons and gear that alter how the charac...

I have an issue affecting only one instance of a platform. Only in certain transforms, when the player moves on the platform, it will push them in the direction the platform is moving. Again, this only happens at certain X /Y co-ordinates and it seems almost as if its random. I use these platforms all throughout my game, and only this one, at certain positions, is acting up.

In the Tales of Symponia you give allies (the ones you are not being used by other players) tactics such as attack magic users, or attack ranged, or when low Mp don't use spells etc which make you feel like you are commanding your party and they don't take your thunder, if they do something well it's because you planned it well as a tactician

I don't make a lot of videos in general though. I don't enjoy making them and I would rather spend the time on development. I post daily-ish updates there in a dedicated devlog channel. :)

      Game Endeavor 17 days ago

I have. :) They are in the same universe but separate worlds. There will be some cross over, but for the most part they're separate. At least as of writing this. I do have some fun connections planned though. One of the things we've talked about in my Discord is having Timmy dig a wormhole into a giant worm's hole that portals into reQuest. If you're unfamiliar with Timmy, he's a little mole in one of my Ludum Dare games. In ZatCD he'll dig tunnels that you can use for fast travelling, but he tends to dig them through boss nests, lol. Possibly soon, actually. I hit a wall with videos and got to where I hated making them, but I recently started working on Zoe and the Cursed Dreamer again, so it's possible I may do some more videos. Right now I'm planning one to announce that I've started working on it again. Not on reQuest though. I'm still working on it, but there's not really any video worthy content to make for it. It's just me making content. Items, enemies, bosses, and levels. :) Mechanically it's pretty much done.

Yo bro, you might think that if your game has character class selection = more choice but that is wrong. One character that can be customized with all the skills you make is leaving more creativity to the player thus = more choice. I want to make blunt weapon warrior with heal spell and lightning spell, it is up to you to balance how can I take a skill from each tree against if I go all out in just warrior tree for example. Thanks bro, I love you.

  • Matthew Gilbert
    Matthew Gilbert 28 days ago

The general consensus in the Godot community is to "call down and signal up" , here we're calling up, do you think signalling up and having the parents have their own handling for the signals to be a good solution here? Is there a performant advantage to the way you do it? Basically I'm just asking for the reasons to do this one way or the other as I'm new :P

    • Game Endeavor
      Game Endeavor 28 days ago

I was aware of that guideline when I made this and chose to break it. :) This is one of the rare cases I break that guideline, because calling up in this instance would be extremely tedious. You would need a signal for every method you wanted to call and variable you wanted to change, or you would need to handle the state logic yourself, defeating the entire purpose of this style of state machine. That guideline is meant to keep everything neat, tidy, and modular, which would certainly not be the case by calling up the tree like that. There's not a performant advantage to this method, more of an organizational one. It separates the logic of the character from the logic of the state machine. The player being the puppet, the state machine being the puppet master.

This looks really nice and that smoothness just gives me the desire to play thay game or battle system. Also, I notice you only have 2 directions for your character, at first I thought it would be weird but it's just perfect even when the character move up left or up right. I think it's also easier to sprite. Only need 1 animation for walk and than you flip it. Nice job!

Quick question: can you call the save file format however you want, like make it a .sav instead of a .dat? Great tutorial, very clear and helpful, gonna keep it handy!

Yes, the filename doesn't matter one bit as far as I know. You could even call it .png if you wanted, lol.

Yeah, I'm working on NPCs for the asset pack with much more planned. My focus is elsewhere atm though, so it might take some time. I was thinking of doing a course after 4 is officially released, but no promises.

Will you be releasing this plugin for use by others? Id love to see it useable for free, and maybe even open source! Everything in the video looks amazing and youre a good developer! Hope to see what you show next!

@Game Endeavor What a shame. Though I'm not here to beg, so I congratulate you on making something cool like this!

Not likely. :) I don't develop my tools in a way that they're useable outside of my own games, and I've no desire to.
