I have a number of stereo components that I have collected over the years, some new but most vintage (1970s to 1990s) that I bought used. As my interest in audio equipment grew, I started to watch You Tube videos by you and others relating to such equipment, including making repairs. I have learned some things and would like to try doing maintenance and minor repairs on my own equipment, but I do not think I have enough knowledge to do so. My educational and work background have nothing to do with electronics, so I feel very inadequate. Also, I don't want to damage my equipment or risk hurting myself by experimenting. How does a person go about learning from scratch how to work on audio equipment when one has no background in electronics to draw from? This is something I would only want to attempt as a hobby. Is there any point in my pursuing this? Thank you.

I wouldn't blame the previous builder of the amp for a mistake you made. After all you cut out everything and proceeded to rebuild it completely. The orangedrops were ok, the disks were okay too. If you ever looked into an old vintage radio or a viintage color tv they don't look much different than that amp. Eico painstakingly did pictorials on the wiring and it looks much like that amp does.

In case you didn't know about it, there is a special glue-in adapter available at Lowes or Home Depot, (or most other electrical supply stores), that you can use with that PVC box that has a rubber insert in the end that has a hole in it that's the same diameter as the round power cord, along with a threaded ring that tightens down onto it so the cord doesn't pull out. It is specifically designed for cords of this round type, and it is an even neater, more professional looking way to do the cord strain relief, and it works just as well as (or even better than), the black push in cable clamp that was used here in this video, except that with the glue-in one you don't have to modify the box hole at all first, you just glue it in with some conduit or PVC glue. The black cable clamp that was used in this video is made specifically for Romex wires going into a metal enclosure such as a breaker panel box.

Hm, you seem to be just repeating what I’m saying, but in a way that’s absurd and without merit. My “useful things to say” were in the video. Do you have any original thoughts? Any videos on capacitors? Any evidence? Any practical knowledge? I’ve actually tested capacitors rigorously and my thoughts aren’t just opinions. They’re the results of actual evidence.

Flux Condenser Vintage Audio Electronics 10 days ago

This amp isn’t that old. The schematic calls for 120 volts and that’s what this unit was tested at. 120 volts on my isolated power supply. Higher voltages can account for higher output wattages, but that’s not the case in this case. I always test amps at their rated voltage.
